What is Cosplay?

One of the most interesting forms of costumer dressing is Cosplay. Here you dress yourself up like a Japanese Anime or Manga character. In addition to dressing up like Japanese anime character, you can also take on looks of characters in Video Games, Comic Books, and And Fantasy Movies.

The term Cosplay is coined by Nov Takahashi, who put together the words ‘Costume Play’, as a reaction to the costume masquerading that he saw in the 1984 Los Angeles Science Fiction Worldcon. The aim behind Cosplay is to dress up exactly as the character that you wish to represent. The dressing up can be something pretty simple with hand-made costumes and it can even range up to being something complex and intricate, like an ornate work of art.

Usually people, who take up Cosplay, enact a scene of the character that they dress like. What is so challenging about dressing up as a Cosplay character is the level of complexity involved in the dressing, the make-up and the hairstyle. Dresses of anime characters are really complex, the make-up is totally unrealistic and the hairdos are truly out of this world. The main characteristic about Cosplay is dressing up in exactly the same way as the character that you wish to take on. This means, not a single fabric color, stitch or seam must be out of place, makeup and hairstyle must exactly match the character being represented. Thus, lot of attention must be given to detail. All these features about Cosplay make it very attractive to take up. Cosplay costumes can be made by the wearer themselves, else they can go to a store sealing such costumes to buy one that they want.

Looking into Cosplay venues, Cosplay is seen to happen in Amusement Parks, Video Game Shows and Nightclubs. The single largest event in which Cosplay is exhibited to the hilt is the Comiket. This event is held twice a year in Japan and it brings together thousands of Cosplayers, who brave the summer heat and the chilling winter to dress up and amuse everyone with their fabulous appearance. In Tokyo’s Akihabara district there are a number of cafes dedicated to people who take up Cosplay. It is not unusual for Japanese teenagers to take up Cosplay, along with friends who share the same interests.

In America, United Kingdom and Australia, Coplay is where people dress up as Sci-Fi Characters or Renaissance Characters. You don’t see much of Japanese Anime like costumes being worn in these areas. Cosplay is becoming popular in Asian countries like Indonesia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, and Thailand and South Korea.

If you wish to get into Cosplay, check out a couple of characters that you think will be ideal for Cosplay Costumes. Then, come up with ideas on how to make their costume. Study everything about the character’s appearance because you have to match it in every way. You will find Cosplay something that brings out your creativity a lot and you have to put a lot of energy into bringing out the right look and effect.
